GCSE success!

This morning, Easington Academy saw plenty of happy, smiling faces as Year 11 students collected their GCSE results after another challenging year due to the pandemic.

Students celebrated in school together with many achieving top grade 9s in a range of subjects.

Top performers included: 

  • Caitlyn Balmer, who achieved seven grade 9s, one grade 8 and one grade 6. She is now going on to study physics, biology and maths at ED6, with a view to becoming a teacher.
  • Molly Barnes-Tate, who achieved seven grade 9s and two grade 8s, and is now going to attend ED6 to study biology, chemistry, maths and psychology. Molly has her sights set on medical school and considering becoming a surgeon.
  • Bethany Egglestone, who attained four grade 9s, two grade 8s and three grade 7s, is going to study psychology, geography and film studies at Middlesbrough College. Bethany said: “I wanted a new challenge, and hope to get involved in making documentaries about natural disasters”.
  • Layla May Giles, who achieved five grade 9s, three grade 8s and one grade 7 and has been given a place at Durham Sixth Form where she will study biology, sociology and geography. Layla is hoping to become a lawyer.
  • Joel Hornsby, who earned an amazing four grade 9s and 5 grade 8s. Joe is going to study physics, biology, PE and maths at Durham Sixth Form; he hopes to study medicine after this.
  • Abbie Hughes was awarded four grade 9s, four grade 8s and one grade 7, and has her sights set on becoming a criminologist eventually.
  • Sammy Luu who achieved six grade 9s and three grade 8s is now preparing to study maths, further maths, chemistry and physics at Durham Sixth Form.
  • Jamie Robson who earned a fantastic set of results, including one grade 9 and three grade 8s. He is going on to study accountancy, business and PE at Durham Sixth Form and is determined to follow in his father and uncle’s footsteps by joining the Marines.
  • Joshua Simpson who scored one grade 9, four grade 8s and four grade 7s, earning him a place at Durham Sixth Form to study biology, PE, psychology and geography. He is hoping to become a qualified physiotherapist one day.
  • Charlie Upperton, who earned a fantastic results from grades 5 to 9, is going to attend the Foundation of Light on a football scholarship, and hopes to play for Sunderland one day.
  • Harvey Young who earned a fabulous set of results, including a grade 9 and three grade 8s will now study electrical engineering at EDC.

“Congratulations to our Year 11 students who collected their impressive GCSE results this morning. We are all extremely proud of the resilience, hard work and dedication they have shown throughout this important yet incredibly challenging time. 

"It was fantastic to see and celebrate with students this morning and discuss their exciting next steps. We wish them all lots of luck and happiness for the future and look forward to hearing about their future successes. Well done and thank you to all staff at the Academy who worked tirelessly to ensure that the awarding of these grades followed a rigorous and fair process.”
