Sports Studies

OCR Sports Studies is suitable for students who want to undertake a sports qualification but are more suited to the vocational style of study and assessment. The course will provide an engaging and stimulating introduction to the world of sport.
Students explore the theory relating to contemporary issues in sport and sport in the media. As well as having the opportunity to develop their own sports skills and lead their own sports sessions.

Students will build a bank of knowledge on a variety of sport related content whilst also developing key transferrable skills in communication, teamwork and organisation.

Whilst studying the Level OCR Sports Studies course students will develop theoretical knowledge within four units of study: Contemporary Issues in Sport, Developing Sports Skills, Sports Leadership and Sport and the Media.

 

Within the Developing Sports Skills unit students will develop knowledge of the key components of performance in team and individual sports, how to apply rules and regulations in a variety of activities and how to identify improvement in their own performances.  

Students will also study contemporary issues in sport whereby they will develop knowledge of the issues which affect participation in sport, the role of sport in promoting values, the importance of national governing bodies in sport.

Within Applying the Sport and the Media unit students will develop knowledge and understanding of a range of different media and how they differ in their sports coverage, the relationship between sport and the media, as well as their ability to evaluate and interpret the different ways in which sports events may be represented by the media.  

Within Sports Leadership unit students will develop knowledge of the attributes associated with successful sports leadership and undertake the planning and leading of sports activities. Following this, students will review the planning and leading of sports activities.
